Karate Club until 1987, when sadly he died, at the age of 58.  Joe was not in good health before joining the club but decided to take up karate to improve his quality of life.  As a beginner at 54 years of age Joe aspired to 4th Kyu grade (purple belt), through sheer hard work and most of all - dedication to the 'Art' which he loved, and which became a major part of his life.  Joe was a lovely man, kind thoughtful and a good role model for any young person to follow.  Joe will always be remembered by those who trained with him, and to commemorate his life, we honour one person each year for the Joe Ratcliffe Award. This award is presented to the nominee who 'seeks the way', as Joe did, and which represents Joe's attributes - a love of life, hard work, honesty, loyalty, commitment and dedication.
